New Orleans was founded in 1718, making it one of the oldest cities in the South. With this long history comes a complicated religious past marked by decadence and spiritual warfare. 

The city gained a reputation for indulgence and sin. Though many of its inhabitants considered themselves spiritual or religious, even Christian, very few understood the gospel. 

But that has not stopped faithful Christians from trying to reach the city. One of the reasons the SBC founded NAMB (then called the Board of Domestic Missions) was to evangelize to New Orleans. 

After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, everything changed. Many longtime residents moved out, and a large number of young people moved in. This series of rapid changes makes New Orleans full of exciting opportunities for church planters.
